No Way Back by Anna Mac

Jane and Madelyn Fowler are the protagonists of this tale. To make it appear that Jane is the one responsible, Madelyn poisons her and then sets herself on fire and attacks herself with a knife. While Madelyn’s parents and brothers swoop in to help, Jack Fowler accuses Jane of being vicious and kicks her in the stomach. The knowledge that Jane had once taken a bullet for her father rips at her heart, leaving her broken and helpless as she lies on the floor.

When Jane looks in the mirror, she is startled to realize that she looks five years younger than when the fire killed her. She gets a new lease on life and comes to terms with the fact that she has been reborn. Instead of living for other people, she resolves to live for herself, make up for her mistakes, and move on. Jane gets herself ready to start a new chapter in her life. She goes back to the place that hurt her before, but this time she feels right at home. Peter, her brother, knocks on her door to tell her that her parents would like her to come downstairs. He remembers a different Jane—one who wanted praise from their family—so his utter lack of interest in her response amazes him.
